This week’s Worst Idea comes to us courtesy of App Developer Magazine with an article titled "Enhancing Employee Engagement With Mobile Technology".
It should come as no surprise that a magazine named "APP Developer" would highlight ways of driving engagement like these: “Pushing corporate information to employees on mobile apps as opposed to memos” and “Sharing best practices with other employees on a company’s social media app”. Fish gotta swim and all that.
In a refrain that’s probably become all too familiar to regular readers of this blog, it’s not so much that I have an issue with a particular tidbit of advice; sharing best practices with other employees via social media apps may be a very effective tactic. My concern is with the potential for making it too easy for (nominal) leaders to conflate these kinds of instrumental connections with real engagement, i.e., what it takes to touch another person’s head and heart via work that has true meaning.
