THE WORST EMPLOYEE ENGAGEMENT IDEA OF THE WEEK

From an article that is, theoretically at least, about employee engagement and headlined: “Specsavers introduces retail incentive scheme”:

“Specsavers has implemented an e-points system to reward and motivate its 17,500 employees.

“The optical retailer has introduced the multi-retailer consumer loyalty scheme from E-points Rewards, through which its employees can choose to buy products from retailers such as Thorntons, Amazon, Marks and Spencer, Odeon, T.G.I. Fridays and Pizza Hut.”

Giving people points for prizes that can be claimed at movie theaters and family restaurants?  It’s not so much that this is a terrible idea in and of itself as it is that it’s so dated.  Did they cadge the idea from Don Draper?  Can wet bars and jars of free cigarettes in conference rooms--just like at Sterling Cooper--be far behind?
