On Thursday, February 26, Rev. Theodore Hesburgh, President Emeritus of the University of Notre Dame, died. His funeral mass and burial will be later today.
Father Ted was a truly great and good man. It was nearly 47 years ago, but I can still remember the kindness he showed me when I was a horribly homesick freshman, struggling with classwork and wondering whether or not I could cut it in college, and he had the challenge of running a large institution at time (it was, after all, the ‘60s) when large institutions were under fire.
In spite of it all, he took the time to be attuned to “the other,” and his example has informed all the work I’ve done and everything I’ve written since graduating—yes, I made it—lo these many years ago.
